It Was Obvious All Along

By Dennis E. Powell | Jun 22, 2022 at 10:04 PM

It is accurately said that pride goeth before a fall. Please make no mistake: What follows is not written out of pride, nor some desire to say, “See? I told you so.” Quite the opposite. I possess no special gift of prophecy. I have no access to inside information. I guess I have wits enough to survive — made it this far, anyway — but nothing much beyond that. Yet somehow I was able to predict a lot of what has happened in the last year or so.

Bad and Getting Worse

By Dennis E. Powell | May 25, 2022 at 9:03 PM

We’re in a mess and I’m not at all confident that we’ll find a way out. The President of the United States, Joseph R. “Bugout” Biden, has included in his portfolio of despicability a hatred of children.

This One Was a Real Celebration

By Dennis E. Powell | May 04, 2022 at 2:37 PM

It started before the pandemic, but the pandemic let it take root and become the norm. We don’t often have funerals any more, at least not religious services in which we mourn the departed and beg God to welcome our dead friend or relative into the splendor of eternal Heavenly life. Instead, the obituary now frequently ends with “A celebration of life will take place at a later date.”

Tales of Shamelessness and Fear

By Dennis E. Powell | Mar 16, 2022 at 8:59 PM

The phone rings in the White House and Bugout Joe Biden, his pre-existing cowardice now exacerbated by geriatric enfeeblement, answers. White House aides let him answer it himself because it’s the hot line from Russia, and every day at about this time it rings. Biden answers, the voice on the other end, Vladimir Putin, says, “BOO!”, and except for Biden’s attendant having to get him a fresh Depends, no harm is done.

The Price of a Weak Leader

By Dennis E. Powell | Mar 09, 2022 at 12:20 PM

It is said that those who can’t, teach. To which I’d add that those who can’t, and who also can’t teach, become bureaucrats. If they clean up well, their path to the loftiest halls of government is clear.

This is Only the Beginning

By Dennis E. Powell | Feb 23, 2022 at 6:27 PM

Anyone familiar with the history of the last 100 years or so should be terrified, because they’ll remember that this is how it began last time. We’re not far from saying “if we’d only acted back then.” Right now is the “back then” we’ll be talking about.

Is the World Too Ridiculous to be Funny?

By Dennis E. Powell | Feb 16, 2022 at 11:30 PM
The news yesterday was sadder than sad: P.J. O’Rourke has died. He was 74 but didn’t look it. He led many of us on a humorous journey over the river and through the woods, from silly childhood to appreciation of being an adult.

Chances Are, It Will Get Worse

By Dennis E. Powell | Nov 17, 2021 at 8:05 PM

We’re in a mess. The country is in the weakest place it’s been in a very long time. If what I suspect and fear comes to pass, it could soon be far worse.

Please Don't Go Brandon

By Timothy R. Butler | Oct 31, 2021 at 5:54 PM

The phrase kept showing up in my social media feed, probably as it has for you. I’ve been busy, so I kept putting off finding out the reason for the latest social media fad, but finally bit: just who is “Brandon” and why is everyone cheering him on? It seemed like everyone was having lighthearted fun… at first.

Time and the Towers, and the Nowhere to Which They Led

By Dennis E. Powell | Sep 08, 2021 at 10:38 PM

Time is a funny thing. Well, no, time is time. Our perception of it is where things go haywire. We’re not very well equipped to comprehend the passage of time or its implications.
